Применяется для передачи IP-пакетов по коммутируемым и выделенным каналам (RFC 1331, 1661). Существуют версии протокола РРР для сетей Х.25 (RFC 1598), ISDN (RFC 1618), SONET/SDN (RFC 1619, 2615), Frame Relay (RFC 1973) и др. См. MLPPP, PPTP.
